It’s particularly stunning in the fall when those rolling, wooded hills become a patchwork of bright and blazing colors. You’ll find a lot of rural farmland here – including plenty of working dairy farms – along with charming small towns. In fact, the biggest factor keeping our dairy farms active and profitable is the Leprino Foods location in Waverly, which processes more than 2.4 million pounds of milk every day. Still, the urban amenities and perks of larger cities are never too far away.
In and around “The Valley,” the cost of living and the crime rate are both below the national average. There are also many well-rated schools across all levels, from public elementary to private colleges and universities. Ithaca is home to the famed Cornell University, but there are multiple other higher education institutions in the region, including six SUNY colleges — the well-respected and nearby Binghamton SUNY University being one of them.
There’s a diverse mix of factors driving the economy across the Twin Tiers. Bradford County, Pa., is the second-highest producer of natural gas in the U.S., just behind Texas. Gas drilling has added hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy during the last decade. In addition, the Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Penn., stands out nationally; it’s often called the “Mayo Clinic of the East,” through its modeling and inspiration. Guthrie’s five hospitals and 35 regional clinics serve some 1 million patients each year. Guthrie’s success has led many people to move to the Twin Tiers for closer access.
